Caused by Dusty Working Conditions
If you believe you're suffering from pneumoconiosis, contact Ron D. Coffel & Associates. Pneumoconiosis is a common disease among industry workers that are exposed to dusty working conditions on the job. Various types of diseases caused by exposure to dust include the following:
- Coal workers' pneumoconiosis - also known as coal miner's black lung
- Asbestosis from exposure to asbestos
- Silicosis from exposure to silica
- Byssinosis from exposure to cotton
- Bauxite fibrosis to bauxite
- Siderosis from exposure to iron
It has been reported that in 2013, there were 260,000 deaths from these types of illnesses, which included 46,000 from silicosis, 24,000 from asbestosis, and 25,000 from coal workers' pneumoconiosis.
Damages Due to Dust and Particles
The pathology of these diseases is reactivity between the lung tissues and the deposit of these dust and particles from inhaling the dust in the workplace. The dust particles are deposited into the lungs and result in fibrotic reactions, leading to a variety of conditions from inflammation and scarring of the lungs to other types of diseases.
Medical Tests and Treatments
The methods to test for these conditions include a chest x-ray, an enhanced CT scan, pulmonary function studies, spirometry and in some cases, a biopsy.
If you experience shortness of breath, exercise, or pulmonary intolerance and have a history of working in a dusty work environment, you should go see a pulmonary specialist doctor that regularly treats occupational diseases and get tested.
